What is AquaSensing?
AquaSensing is a University of Waterloo spin-off, founded in 2019, that builds battery-free, energy-harvesting leak detection sensors. The sensors detect as little as 0.1 mm of liquid and are designed to be maintenance-free, install in minutes, and cost up to 80% less than traditional leak-detection systems. Two product lines cover different needs: Point Detectors for precise detection at critical spots, and 2D Detectors for large-area coverage.
How do the battery-free sensors work?
Instead of running on batteries, each sensor harvests its own energy from a leak. When water or a water-based fluid contacts the sensing component, the sensor draws energy from that fluid ingress and uses it to power a small wireless Bluetooth beacon, which transmits an alert to a cloud-connected gateway. Because the sensor only needs power at the exact moment a leak occurs, there are no batteries to charge or replace, and the design can operate for decades. The current generation pairs AquaSensing's energy-harvesting technology with InPlay's NanoBeacon Bluetooth chipset.
What types of leaks can the sensors detect?
Water and a broad range of water-based fluids: water, steam, condensation, and water-based solutions such as coolants and lubricants, as well as other industrial fluids. The sensors are highly sensitive, detecting as little as 0.1 mm of liquid, which enables early intervention before damage spreads. That sensitivity covers everything from a small drip under an appliance to corrosion under insulation (CUI) forming along an industrial pipeline.
What communication options are supported (BLE, LoRa, 5G, Satellite)?
The sensors support BLE, LoRa, 5G, and Satellite connectivity. BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) is available today, with LoRa, 5G, and Satellite configurations offered to match different deployment needs: short-range monitoring inside a building over BLE, or long-range and remote-site coverage over LoRa, 5G, or Satellite. Whichever option you use, alerts feed into a cloud-connected gateway.
Where can the sensors be installed?
Point Detectors suit confined and critical spots: under sinks, around appliances and HVAC systems, on manufacturing equipment and pipelines, in operating rooms and pharmaceutical storage, in data centers, and on construction sites. 2D Detectors cover large continuous areas: pipelines and tanks (including CUI in refineries), commercial and industrial roofs, aircraft, ships and railcars, water treatment plants and reservoirs, and cold-storage facilities. The sensors are compact, rugged, and install plug-and-play with no wiring, and they operate in extreme temperatures (Point Detectors -40 C to 85 C; 2D Detectors -40 C to 300 C).
How are the sensors maintained?
Effectively maintenance-free. With no batteries, there is nothing to charge or swap, and the sensors are built to run for decades: deploy once and forget about maintenance. The only serviceable part is the eco-friendly sensing component, which is easy to replace after it has contacted liquid, keeping the sensor ready for the next event while minimizing waste.
